Speech is Light, 2025
HD-video, b/w, color, sound, 7’10”
Speech is Light takes its title from Marianne Moore’s poem Light is Speech, inverting the phrase to shift emphasis from utterance to perception. The video mirrors the communicative relationship of sea lions beneath the surface through vibration, proximity and pressure. A study of the subtle frequencies of emotional exchange. The sound is a submerged version of the original ending of Pharoah Sanders’ “Harvest Time”: where frequencies are shifted, some harmonics filtered out and others amplified forming an extended, fragmented underwater soundscape.
